Ex Newcastle footballer frozen out after cancer diagnosis

Posted: Friday, 4 January 2019 @ 13:43

The ex Newcastle player, Jonas Gutiérrez has launched a £2m disability discrimination claim against the club, saying he was dropped as a result of his year-long battle with testicular cancer.

He is suing the Premier League club for disability discrimination after he said managers “shockingly” asked him to leave and find another club just two months after having surgery.

This is all in full flow at the Newcastle employment tribunal.

Having briefly looked at this what is striking is how the Claimant is complaining not just about the legality of the Respondent's position but how the Respondent has conducted itself (e.g not treating the player with sympathy with news of the cancer diagnosis.)

It mirrors a case I am involved with at the moment where poor employment relations adds fire to a stressful situation. This is not the first time Newcastle football club has been in Employment Tribunal (ex manager Kevin Keegan) and might very well be a sign of poor employment relations.
