Cases of unfair dismissal, discrimination and disputes over redundancy payments can all be heard by employment tribunals.
For an employer the costs of defending a case at an employment tribunal can be horrendous, not just in terms of the awards made against the employer but also in terms of legal costs and management time.
In tribunal cases from April 2006 to March 2007 the average award for unfair dismissal for example was £7,974 and the average award for costs just over £2,000. But this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to evaluating the true cost of resourcing and managing such a dispute.
The bad news is that claims have been in the increase over recent years. Equal pay claims accounted for a substantial proportion of this increase with unfair dismissal claims also on the up.
With sound employment policies and practices you can avoid being guilty of unfair dismissal, discrimination or any of the other traps employers fall into.
