According to the High Performance Unit being a leader involves more than rallying the troops, MBA qualifications and a reputation for toughness.
The greatest leaders evolve others in their organisation to be even greater than themselves. The best leaders surround themselves with individuals to build teams that operate more effectively than one individual would alone.
But building the most effective team ensures that decisions needed at that top level – the pinnacle of the organisation,....

From my experience one of the flaws of most conflict resolution and mediation courses is their inability to deal with the one on one confrontations. They do not train the would be mediator to dealing and handling conflicts.
Yes, the model often gets the mediator or manager to identify issues, develop strenths and weaknesses, apply some pressure but what about giving tips on handling one on one conflict.
Let's face it. Most managers dread conflict.
I believe that mediation is....

I read that the Government has so far paid more than £20 million in one-off redundancy payments as part of the "bonfire of the quangos", figures have revealed. The statistics, obtained by the BBC under the Freedom of Information Act, showed there have been almost 1,000 redundancies from 29 of the 481 public bodies being wound down in cost cutting measures. One employee from The Crown Prosecution Service was paid £200,000, according to the data. I wonder how much negotiation....

The recent announcement from Eric Pickles that he would amend the Decentralisation and Localism Bill,to require a full council debate whenever an authority plans to hire a new employee on a salary of £100,000 or more has certainly got some attention. He recently said: ‘Local government jobs will now have to be “democracy-proofed” before mega salaries are paid out. Councils need to make sure they don’t sully their reputation by taking decisions behind closed doors to....

I understand that there will be an announcement about the transitional provisions abolishing the default retirement age, which are expected to be published later this week. According to PLC, the transitional provisions will provide for the default retirement age to survive until 6th April 2012 (not 30th September 2011 as previously thought), provided the employee has reached 65 on or before 30th September 2011.
This allows for up to 12 months' notice of intention to retire to be issued before ....

With news on more redundancies within the public sector, eagle eyed employees will be wise to focus on the selection pool for determining if the redundancy is fair or not.
Legally, the group from which employees will be selected for redundancy (the selection pool) must be carefully identified. It will usually consist of those who undertake a similar type of work in a particular department, who work at a relevant location, or whose work has ceased or diminished or is expected to do so. Obj....

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has conducted a study which found that intentions of employers regarding redundancy had peaked since the study began in 2004.
In every ten organisations, four were planning redundancies during the first quarter of the year, the survey revealed. These numbers included a third of NHS employers, 50 per cent of central government staff and three-quarters of those working within local government departments.
This is all old hat to those who watch....

I read that the Army has apologised after a reported 38 soldiers learned they were losing their jobs by e-mail. The Sun said the men - all long-serving warrant officers and including one serving in Afghanistan - were told they were victims of the defence cuts with the soldiers each received a message giving them one year's notice and advising them to "start planning your resettlement". Not surpising that this news got out. To some extent the Army have limited legal rights; They do not ....

Today it was announced that the government has been defeated in the High Court over the way it scrapped part of England's school building programme. The education secretary's decision to axe Buildings Schools for the Future (BSF) projects in six local authority areas was ruled unlawful as he failed to consult on it. A judge ordered Education Secretary Michael Gove to reconsider the move. The government said it had won the case on the substantive points. Mr Justice Holman, sitting in London, allo....

The NHS could save hundreds of millions of pounds by adjusting its approach to sickness absence to focus on how local managers influence levels of sick leave, an Audit Commission report has said. Staff sickness levels in the NHS vary significantly across the UK, with employees in deprived areas taking more time off sick; the north and north-east of England had much higher absence of rates than the south. The best trusts had absence rates of just four annual sick days per employee while the worst....

Staff at Neath Port Talbot Council have agreed to cuts in pay, overtime and travel allowances as part of the authority's cost cutting measures. The 7,000 workers have accepted a deal brokered by managers and the unions. Welsh local government leaders said it was a "mature agreement" which would help safeguard jobs. The one-year agreement is aimed at minimising compulsory redundancies as the council looks to close a £24m gap in its budget by 2014. Council leaders had w....
